Ireland’s Climate Action Catalyst
Peatlands and People
Supporting the realisation of a carbon-neutral, climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable country, with funding from the EU LIFE programme.
Three powerful pillars
Working together to restore and rehabilitate peatlands across Ireland's midlands as well as establish a business accelerator programme and design an immersive visitor experience. A 7-year LIFE Integrated Project, Peatlands and People collaborates locally, regionally, nationally and internationally to generate and share solutions and knowledge for a better future.
"Our peatlands are a precious resource in terms of storing carbon, restoring biodiversity and supporting local communities in new jobs taking care of our environment."
Minister Eamon Ryan TD, from the project launch
Helping deliver on Ireland’s Climate Action Plan
The project partners will prepare, implement and monitor the impact of the three pillars and promote behaviour in support of Ireland's Climate Action Plan. The restored and rehabilitated peatlands are expected to store more carbon, protect biodiversity, improve water quality and support other benefits, while the Accelerator and Discovery Visitor Experience aim to support economic growth and create space for social action.
