Aligning with the EU Green Week, the LIFE IP Peatlands and People project held a targeted event to celebrate the project's restoration and rehabilitation work and showcase project progress to the ELMEN/CINEA LIFE team on 10-11 June 2025 at the BnM visitor centre in Boora, Offaly.
The event, which was held at the BnM visitor centre in Boora, Offaly, showcased the work done to date and highlighted the commencement of the project's final two years to several bodies affiliated with the EU LIFE Programme.
Some highlights:
The visit included a hands-on introduction to sphagnum planting across two peatland sites, Ballaghurt bog and Killaranny bog, introducing participants to the importance of sphagnum planting for peatland restoration and providing them with the opportunity to plant new plugs. As part of this, BnM highlighted its successful sphagnum planting campaign to date, with over 1 million sphagnum plugs planted.

The EPA-funded projects CO2PEAT, CH4peat, WET-PEAT, and ASPEN presented recent project updates and outcomes that inform the implementation, impacts and monitoring requirements of Peatlands and People.
Following the restoration work, the event highlighted the project’s success in establishing a new Accelerator programme for systemic innovation focused on low-carbon and circular economies.
