📍 Ballyforan Bog, Co. Roscommon
🚶➡️Meeting point: Ballyforan Greenway Car park at 11 am
In celebration of National Heritage week, the Peatlands and People LIFE project, in collaboration with BnM and the local Ballyforan Area Transition Team (BATT), is hosting a guided ecology and heritage walk on the Ballyforan Bog, Co. Roscommon on Saturday, the 23rd of August 2025.
Join BnM Ecologists for a guided walk around the newly constructed 3.1km Ballyforan Greenway loop to hear about the bog's history, recent bog restoration measures and how this supports climate action, and about the biodiversity of this bog.
Ballyforan Bog and the immediate area has been closely linked with Bord na Móna for generations and was used for industrial peat extraction in the past. The bog is now radically transformed with the recent construction of a public amenity greenway around it, developed by the Ballyforan Area Transition Team. The bog has recently been re-wetted by Bord na Mona via the Peatlands Climate Action Scheme and Sphagnum Moss has been inoculated across the site as part of the Peatlands and People Integrated LIFE Project to support the restoration of peat-forming conditions and ultimately turn these peatlands back into carbon sinks.
Learn more about the bog’s history and how the recent bog restoration measures support climate action and biodiversity in the guided walk by BnM ecologists! The walk will take approximately 2.5 hours. Appropriate footwear and rain jackets are advised.
